Abstract

The use of artificial intelligence has become ubiquitous in the present time. Despite its everyday use across different sectors of our society, it has become a source of concern. The concern has risen to a level of panic among different people. The study explored the utilization of ChatGPT for learning by Daystar and Strathmore University students and lecturers. Against the backdrop of growing concerns by parents and scholars in Kenya, the study probed the views of these students and lecturers regarding the incorporation of ChatGPT and its utilization for learning. The objectives that guided the study aimed: i) To find out the Daystar and Strathmore University students and lecturers views on the utilization of ChatGPT for learning. ii) To investigate the influence of ChatGPT on learning on Daystar and Strathmore University students and lecturers. iii) To examine the ethical considerations used when utilizing ChatGPT by Daystar and Strathmore University students and lecturers. This study used snowball sampling. Furthermore, the study adopted an exploratory research design to explore the perceptions, experiences and insights of key stakeholders (Daystar and Strathmore University students and lecturers) on the utilization of ChatGPT for learning. This study used thematic analysis method to analyze the data collected from semi – structured interviews. The study findings revealed, I) Embracing ChatGPT for learning was welcomed by students and lecturers. II) Concerns and criticisms of ChatGPT in learning were raised by lecturers and students. III) The efficiency and time-saving Nature of ChatGPT boosted productivity of students and lecturers. IV) Students had to use other sources and be transparent about using ChatGPT due to its citation restrictions and potential inaccuracies, ensuring they receive honest feedback from lecturers. V) No ethical considerations on ChatGPT Utilization provided room for ethical malpractice
